I've love the fair! When I've told this to my new Colorado friends in anticipation of the Colorado State Fair, they've pretty much all told me not to get my hopes up. The Texas State Fair was a unquestionable part of my childhood. I didn't realize until I went away to college that every town doesn't have its own annual revelry of sticky sweet food, sparkling lights, thrilling rides, and (later) cute boys galore. I had not been to the fair since I was 19, so every time I drove by the Colorado State Fairgrounds (which is blocks away from our new house) I relived those exciting memories and counted down the days until I could make new ones with my own kids.
Of course, seeing such a sight through the eyes of your own children brings a whole new kind of thrill. And despite the naysayers, this year's fair was everything I remembered and so much more! We dared to try out the fastest rides, hung back on a few we just weren't ready for, and feasted on hot dogs and funnel cakes, (Not health food to be sure, but call me old school, there's no way I'm putting a fried candy bar or fried snack cake into my body.) fresh squeezed lemonade and curly fries. The kids' favorite rides turned out to be the fun houses which really are fun, if you think like a kid. And Maisey even won two stuffed animals and voluntarily gave one to her big brother. We watched local dance troops perform, marveled at the many kinds of bunny rabbits, and ooh'd and aah'd over an 11 year old friend's photograph that won a juror's choice award. What's not to love about that??
I'm so glad I thought to bring my Zumi to capture the ostentatious displays of color and light. All heady and deliriously beautiful. A perfect evening and the perfect way to round out our first Colorado summer. But maybe that's just me.

Do not let the nay sayers dampen your enthusiasm for fair entertainment.
Love the bright lights and loud music and all the sights and smells.
I think it is wonderful you have the imagination and ability to see it as your children see it.
And except for all the extra traffic it brings, how cool to have it close enough to enjoy all week.
(I was one of those kids who "ran away" and joined the show.)

I remember candied apples and cotton candy and roller coasters, and ferris wheels and all the neon lights; the mouse trap and the tilt a whirl and the scrambler -- I'm going to go to our fair one evening next month and take some pictures. How grand!
